Berlin (dpa) – Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has a chance to make the Euro 2016 squad despite an injury setback, general manager Oliver Bierhoff believes.

Manchester United’s Schweinsteiger partially tore a knee ligament during training Wednesday for the friendlies against England and Italy.

The 31-year-old midfielder is expected to be sidelined for several weeks which coincide with the final countdown to the tournament in France for which the squad must be nominated by May 30 and which starts on June 10.

«He can make it, even at age 31, as long as there is a lot of intention and a lot of determination,» Bierhoff said.

Schweinsteiger, 31, has had various injury problems in his career and only barely made the 2014 World Cup where he helped the team to the title.

«He is a very intelligent and experienced player. He plays a position where you have to run a lot but as an experienced player also know a few shortcuts. I think he can do it even though its not ideal to go into the tournament without matches,» Bierhoff said.
