LAUSANNE, January 22, 2024 – What could a newsroom look like if AI (Artificial Intelligence) took over? The cover of the latest issue of the AIPS Magazine (IV/23) gives you an idea, and interestingly the image on it was generated by DALL-E3, the image creator powered by OpenAI, in response to the question above. The AIPS President Gianni Merlo has highlighted AI as one of the major challenges facing journalism as AIPS turns 100 years old this year (2024). This topic will be discussed during the AIPS Centenary Congress taking place from April 28 – May 2 in Santa Susanna, Spain.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AI has increasingly become part of everyday life and there is a never-ending debate over its risks and benefits. In the cover story, Martin Mazur thoroughly examines the future of AI in (sports) journalism. His question to DALL-E3 produced frightening images: “A nearly abandoned and dusty office, old PCs piled up, newspapers scattered on the floor and tall columns of wires from supercomputers dominating the scene. The aesthetics resembled the post-apocalypse photos of Chernobyl. But is AI the big danger in journalism or can it be a solution?” The AIPS President Gianni Merlo, in his editorial, insists on the need to properly control the use of AI.

CONTENT CREATORS In addition to Artificial Intelligence, Merlo also raises another issue: the growing influence of content creators in the mixed zones and press conferences of sports events. He coins the acronym «CC» for the term Content Creator and explains that “the Content Creator is a figure with whom some would like to replace journalists and this is not acceptable, because there is the risk of contaminating the reports of events.” He adds: “We are not against those who work (as Content Creators), but we just want to avoid confusion of roles.”

40 YEARS OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Olaf Brockmann was honoured during the AIPS Journalists on the Podium at Budapest 2023 as one of two journalists who can boast of covering all the editions of the World Athletics Championships till date. “What an incredible journey I have been privileged to experience as a journalist at all 19 World Championships to date. It has also been a journey through the transformation of the working conditions from the very beginning with computers to the transmission via impeccable internet connections. Countless images from these 40 years flicker through my mind. Here I want to share just a few of my memories.”

LACROSSE Following the inclusion of Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash as additional sports on the programme for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28), there has been one big question: Will the IOC recognise the Haudenosaunee Confederacy to play Lacrosse at Los Angeles 2028 Olympics? Although the Native Americans invented the sport, which can be traced back to as early as the 12th century, at the moment they cannot participate in the Olympics under their own flag.

AIPS CHAMPIONS OF 2023 Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic and US gymnastics icon Simone Biles were named the AIPS Athletes of the 2023 following a poll by the AIPS in which 405 journalists from 107 countries voted. The Argentina Men’s Football National Team won the award for the Best Team of the Year and the best press facilities were acknowledged – with the World Athletics Championships Budapest 2023 leading the way in the single-sport category and FISU World University Games Chengdu 2021 on top in the multi-sport category.
