Cuando Catherine Ibarguen Mena, con escasos doce años de edad, jugaba al vóleibol en las canchas de Apartadó, un municipio del occidente antioqueño a orillas del golfo de Urabá, no tenía aún la lucidez para vislumbrar un futuro como el que hoy le está acompañando en la gloria mundial del atletismo.

Pero sí tenía la ilusión de una chica de su edad para emprender un camino hacia nuevos horizontes y fue entonces cuando conoció a su “mesías”, Wilder Zapata, un entrenador de la época que encontró en Ibarguen las características de una futura triunfadora en el atletismo.

Esa es parte de la historia que la misma Catherine nos contó en Londres el año pasado, después de su histórica medalla de plata olímpica y hasta entonces el máximo logro de un atleta colombiano en toda la historia del deporte base. Antes, Ximena Restrepo había ganado la medalla de plata en los Olímpicos de Barcelona en 1992.

El secreto de su éxito empezó allá, en la capital antioqueña, como ha sido el de muchos jóvenes de provincia que emigraron a la urbe paisa para consolidar sus sueños, los mismos que hoy son realidad en el deporte colombiano.

Y la historia de Catherine no es ajena a cuanto han vivido otros deportistas de todas las regiones de Colombia… historias pletóricas en sacrificios y dificultades, pero con el sello de la constancia, la dedicación y el empuje de colombianos.

Por lo menos eso fue lo que reflejó Catherine desde el estadio Olímpico de Moscú unos segundos después de su histórica conquista en el templo del mundial atlético, donde frente a sus más férreas adversarias, las mismas con quienes ha perdido y las mismas a quienes les ha ganado en los carriles del salto de todo el mundo, les recordó que su trayectoria lenta pero segura, le ha reportado los dividendos que siempre soñó.

Ibarguen, la de amplia sonrisa, la de piel color de ébano, la exitosa y pujante muchacha de 1.80 de estatura que empezó a labrar su consagración por allá a sus 15 años en un suramericano de atletismo cuando se colgó su primera medallas que fue de bronce en el salto alto, con marca de 1.76, no ocultó toda la emoción al ocupar el cajón más alto en la máxima cita orbital que ofrece el atletismo.

Se enfundó en el tricolor colombiano… saludó a toda Colombia, habló con el Presidente, con su abuela desde Apartadó y mostrando su felicidad al mundo, ratificó que la plata de Londres era la antesala para llegar al oro mundialista.

Después de los Juegos Bolivarianos en Ambato, Ecuador, incursionó en el salto triple en la categoría Junior…entonces corría el año 2002.

“ Lo recuerdo como si fuera hoy. Tenía la ilusión de asistir a unos Juegos Olímpicos y buscaba la clasificación para Atenas 2004. Lo conseguí pero salí en primera ronda”. También esto hace parte de sus mejores recuerdos, como el debut en el 2006 también en Moscú, en el mundial en pista cubierta.

Contar su historia sería interminable, pero no pueden quedar fuera de registro la plata iberoamericana en 2010, la plata en los Centroamericanos y del Caribe en Puerto Rico, el bronce panamericano en Salto largo y el oro del Salto triple en Guadalajara 2011, el bronce mundial en Daegu….

Colombia se volvió a paralizar, como aquellos días de los olímpicos de Londres, como en los épicos finales de etapa del Giro de Italia y en las inolvidables trepadas del reciente Tour de Francia….

Tal vez esos mismos aficionados que estaban pegados a los televisores el 15 de agosto, tenían la esperanza de una excelente actuación, pero pocos estaban convencidos que los primeros lugares en la Liga de Diamante en Mónaco y Londres en el 2012 y los triunfos en la misma Liga este año en Shangai, Eugene, Oslo y París, eran la antesala para el día del oro mundial.

DIÁLOGO CON EL PRESIDENTE

“Qué felicidad, quería felicitarte a nombre mío y a nombre de todos los colombianos, qué maravilla de resultado. Nos haces sentir a todos muy orgullosos. Muchas felicitaciones y te mandamos todo el cariño del pueblo colombiano”, dijo Santos.

Catherine Respondió: “gracias por este apoyo que usted también nos ha brindado y esto fue el resultado de un gran trabajo que se ha hecho y el apoyo que hemos obtenido, gracias a Dios se hace historia por el país. Estoy muy contenta y trabajando para darle más alegrías al país”.

El presidente le respondió a la deportista “yo sé que así será, nos haces sentir muy orgullosos a todos y continúa cosechando triunfos que aquí te estamos apoyando y queriendo cada vez más”.

¡Catherine … Black Golden! … and the world gold came to athletics
