   A lo largo de las décadas, el mundo ha visto transitar futbolistas de toda índole y clase, como “los eternos” con la diez en la espalda o los letales centrodelanteros; sin embargo, la posición de un ocho con temperamento en ocasiones pasa a segundo plano. Pero Gennaro Iván Gattuso no quiso que su número quedara en la tapa posterior de un periódico, sino también en las primeras planas. El italiano, cuando saltaba al césped, se transformaba en un “salvaje animal”, con hambre voraz, para no permitir armar juego al rival. Con solo su presencia en un partido, los jugadores ofensivos del otro bando perfilan sus jugadas con precaución, dando lugar al show de recuperación de pelota por el ocho leyenda. Gattuso, entre sus principales logros como futbolista, es campeón de la Liga de Campeones de la UEFA en 2003 y 2007 con el AC Milán y campeón de la Copa Mundial de Fútbol de 2006 con la selección italiana. Un atleta con coraje cuando va al mano a mano, al límite del reglamento; si tiene que romper la valla publicitaria para salvar un balón, lo hace. O “poner el parche” en el boca a boca a un contrario para defender a un compañero, lo realiza igual que si regalara pizza.

   “Rino”, como le llamaban sus amigos en referencia a Rinoceronte, se sumergía en sus aguas y no daba lugar a la burla por su estilo de juego. Para los románticos, amantes del jogo bonito, Gattuso era un insulto al balón. “Algunos nacen pianistas y otros cargamos el piano. Así es la vida”, zanjó en una oportunidad. Y vaya que tenía toda la razón; su espíritu indomable en la mitad del terreno, cargando al equipo en la espalda, es lo que los entrenadores modernos hoy requieren: un volante que quite pelota, destruya al adversario y arme un cambio de ritmo, un contragolpe, un pase al vacío, una jugada prometedora. Gennaro Iván es inteligente al cortar ataques; su despliegue en el rectángulo es formidable, más aún con la indumentaria rota o manchada de sangre por un roce. Si nos remontamos a aquella final del Mundial 2006, frente a la Francia de Zidane, su actuación fue ejemplar y sirvió superlativamente para que la copa viajara a Italia. Uno que lleva puesta la número ocho es como un seis de marca neta y un diez de creación. Es lo que encarna el ya en estos años entrenador de destacados equipos. Para sus pupilos, es suficiente con mirar su rostro desaliñado y emprender una especie de guerra en el verde.

   Gattuso aterrizó en Escocia cuando tenía 17 años y jugaba en la Serie B. Su estadía en aquel país fue difícil, ya que no había sol, no estaba con su madre y no hablaba inglés. Para comer, cenaba con unos obreros italianos en una pizzería que se convirtió en su casa. Con su innato sentido de picardía, llegó a casarse nada menos que con la hija del dueño del negocio. En otra anécdota escrita en su biografía “Pienso primero, luego juego”, el centrocampista narró algunas de sus aventuras con Pirlo, donde una muy curiosa se dio cuando ambos coincidieron en la selección y en el AC Milan: “Pirlo es una persona verdaderamente divertida, aunque fuera del campo era un hijo de puta. Un día estaba almorzando y dejé mi teléfono en la mesa. Sin verlo, él envió un mensaje a Galliani (presidente del Milan) y a Braida (director deportivo) para ofrecerles a mi hermana; les dijo que, si me renovaban, se la llevaba. Me volví loco ese día”, detalló Gattuso. “Después de los mensajes, Pirlo me corrigió una palabra tres veces. Me cambiaba los tiempos verbales, como si siempre lo estuviera diciendo mal. Estaba con varios compañeros y me enfadé mucho, por lo que sabían que tenían que esconderse; agarraron unos cuchillos y yo un tenedor. Lo seguí buscando para clavárselo y vengarme por lo de mi hermana; fue una buena excusa, pero no lo logré”, se sinceró entre risas. Y es que estas travesías de camarín son bien recibidas por los hinchas, ya que encarnan al futbolista como una persona normal de carne y hueso, sin sentirse soberbios ni altaneros, como algunos que se hacen llamar futbolistas profesionales.

   “He tomado cosas de los entrenadores que he tenido en el pasado. Ancelotti es un todoterreno: consigue meterse en la cabeza de todo el mundo, lo cual es un don increíble”. Comenta sobre su entrenador cuando brilló en el AC Milán. En el ámbito de la persona integral que encarna el de “Belpaese”, es capaz de reconocer sus errores públicamente y confiesa que tiene que “calmarse”, como en una ocasión declaró: “Hoy me merecí la expulsión, hice un poco de mierda. Hubo algunas palabras de más, exageré, soy sincero”. Lo que se vende hoy en día por las redes es el lado oscuro de los atletas, pero Gennaro es el reflejo de un ciudadano auténtico, con un alma de reconciliación y sin remordimiento alguno. Cuando se hable de él, siempre se recordará aquel manotazo en la cara al “grandulón sueco”, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, en 2003 frente al Ajax. El “indomable” se pintó con la roja directa. Nadie le avisó a Gattuso que Zlatan, siete años después, firmaría por los “rossoneri” y serían compañeros. En el Milán, “Ibra” se desquitó, como relató Thiago Silva, compañero de ambos en aquella magnífica aventura: “Durante un entrenamiento, Gattuso se lo pasó fastidiando toda la mañana a Ibrahimovic, quien en ese momento no hizo nada y aguantó al tipo. La venganza llegó más tarde. Se vieron en el vestuario, Ibra lo agarró de los pies, lo puso boca abajo y lo tiró al cubo de la basura”. Así es la leyenda Gattuso: a veces regala y en otras le dan su vuelto; pero siempre dando la cara, el pecho dentro y fuera del césped. En Corigliano Calabro, provincia de Calabria, Italia, en enero de 1978, es donde nació este prodigio del fútbol, el mejor centrocampista de marca de todos los tiempos; y ahí empezó a escribir su propia historia. Gattuso, the indomitable.

   Over the decades, the world has seen all kinds of soccer players, such as “the eternal ones” with the number ten on their backs or lethal center forwards; however, the position of a temperamental number eight sometimes takes a back seat. But Gennaro Iván Gattuso did not want his number to remain on the back page of a newspaper, but also on the front pages. When the Italian took to the field, he became a “wild animal” with a voracious appetite, preventing his opponents from building up their game. With just his presence in a match, the opposing team’s offensive players would plan their moves with caution, giving rise to the legendary number 8’s ball recovery show. Among his main achievements as a footballer, Gattuso is a UEFA Champions League winner in 2003 and 2007 with AC Milan and a World Cup winner in 2006 with the Italian national team. He is an athlete with courage when he goes one-on-one, pushing the limits of the rules; if he has to break the advertising board to save a ball, he does so. Or “putting a patch” on an opponent’s mouth to defend a teammate, he does it as if he were giving away pizza.

   “Rino,” as his friends called him in reference to a rhinoceros, immersed himself in his game and did not allow himself to be mocked for his style of play. For romantics, lovers of the jogo bonito, Gattuso was an insult to the ball. «Some are born pianists and others carry the piano. That’s life,» he once said. And boy, was he right; his indomitable spirit in the middle of the field, carrying the team on his back, is what modern coaches need today: a midfielder who steals the ball, destroys the opponent, and creates a change of pace, a counterattack, a through ball, a promising play. Gennaro Iván is intelligent at cutting off attacks; his deployment on the field is formidable, even more so with his uniform torn or stained with blood from a collision. If we go back to that 2006 World Cup final against Zidane’s France, his performance was exemplary and served superbly to bring the cup to Italy. Someone wearing the number eight is like a six in defense and a ten in creation. That is what the coach of outstanding teams embodies these days. For his players, it is enough to look at his disheveled face and wage a kind of war on the field.

   Gattuso arrived in Scotland when he was 17 and playing in Serie B. His stay in that country was difficult, as there was no sun, he was away from his mother, and he did not speak English. For dinner, he ate with some Italian workers at a pizzeria that became his home. With his innate sense of mischief, he ended up marrying none other than the daughter of the business owner. In another anecdote written in his biography “I think first, then I play,” the midfielder recounted some of his adventures with Pirlo, including a very curious one that occurred when they both played for the national team and AC Milan: «Pirlo is a really funny person, although off the field he was a son of a bitch. One day I was having lunch and left my phone on the table. Without me seeing, he sent a message to Galliani (Milan president) and Braida (sporting director) offering them my sister; he told them that if they renewed my contract, he would take her. I went crazy that day,“ Gattuso explained. ”After the messages, Pirlo corrected a word three times. He changed my verb tenses, as if I was always saying it wrong. I was with several teammates and I got very angry, so they knew they had to hide; they grabbed some knives and I grabbed a fork. I kept looking for him to stab him and get revenge for my sister; it was a good excuse, but I didn’t succeed,» he confessed with a laugh. These dressing room antics are well received by fans, as they portray the footballer as a normal person of flesh and blood, without feeling arrogant or haughty, like some who call themselves professional footballers.

   “I’ve taken things from the coaches I’ve had in the past. Ancelotti is an all-rounder: he manages to get inside everyone’s head, which is an incredible gift.” He comments on his coach when he shone at AC Milan. In the realm of the well-rounded person embodied by “Belpaese,” he is able to publicly acknowledge his mistakes and admits that he needs to “calm down,” as he once stated: “Today I deserved to be sent off, I screwed up a bit. I said a few words too many, I exaggerated, I’m being honest.” What is sold today on social media is the dark side of athletes, but Gennaro is the reflection of an authentic citizen, with a soul of reconciliation and without any remorse. When people talk about him, they will always remember that slap in the face to the “big Swede,” Zlatan Ibrahimovic, in 2003 against Ajax. The “indomitable” was sent off with a straight red card. No one warned Gattuso that Zlatan, seven years later, would sign for the Rossoneri and they would be teammates. At Milan, “Ibra” got his revenge, as recounted by Thiago Silva, their teammate in that magnificent adventure: «During training, Gattuso spent the whole morning annoying Ibrahimovic, who at the time did nothing and put up with the guy. Revenge came later. They met in the locker room, Ibra grabbed him by the feet, turned him upside down, and threw him into the trash can.» Such is the legend of Gattuso: sometimes he gives, and sometimes he gets it back, but he always stands up for himself, on and off the field. In Corigliano Calabro, in the province of Calabria, Italy, in January 1978, this football prodigy, the best defensive midfielder of all time, was born; and there he began to write his own story.
