BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 1 de febrero de 2018.- Colombia es uno de los países del mundo en el que, el invierno, como tal, con nieve y densas capas de hielo no se ve, lo más cercano al clima de invierno es el que se tiene en las altas montañas como en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, el Nevado del Ruiz, la Sierra del Cocuy o el Nevado del Tolima, los cuales se encuentran a más de 5000 metros de altura, por lo que se convierten en lugares poco o nada propicios para la práctica deportiva.

Muy a pesar de esto, los juegos Olímpicos de Invierno ya no son unas justas sorpresa para Colombia, pues cada vez más los atletas nacionales incursionan en deportes que hacen parte de ese ciclo. Si bien, en el país no tienen como prepararse, lo hacen en el exterior donde participan en torneos, clasificatorios y además pueden foguearse con los mejores del mundo. Es así como para este año, en los juegos que se realizarán en PyeongChang, Colombia contará con la participación de cuatro atletas, siendo esta la segunda presencia de los cafeteros, teniendo en cuenta que la primera fue en 2010 con la esquiadora Cynthia Denzler.

Michael Poettoz, fue el primer colombiano en clasificarse a PyeongChang 2018, nació en Cali el 21 de agosto de 1998, y no es curioso que no hable español, pues 2 años después fue entregado en adopción a Michael y Cécile Poettoz una pareja de esposos franceses y llevado a vivir a Europa.

El pequeño Michael empezaría a practicar Esquí a la edad de 3 años y guiado por su padre quien se convirtió además en su entrenador. A los 10 años comenzó a participar en los torneos nacionales de Europa y tan solo 5 años después debutó en campeonatos internacionales. Fue el primer atleta colombiano en llevar la bandera tricolor en unos juegos olímpicos de invierno, los juveniles realizados en Lillehammer, Noruega, 2016, por lo que esta se convierte en su segunda participación.

Durante su visita a Colombia, donde estuvo acompañado de su padre y de un traductor, Michael expresó que “siempre será una gran presión representar a Colombia en unos Juegos Olímpicos. Me he preparado a conciencia, he dedicado muchas horas a entrenar, es una gran responsabilidad y voy con una preparación a conciencia”. Bien puede que esta no sea la primera vez que lucirá los colores de la bandera colombiana, pero para este joven de 19 años, nunca será fácil, “los nervios estarán presentes, eso es normal, pero también siempre será una gran alegría representar a Colombia, yo puedo representar a Francia, pero prefiero representar a este país porque también soy colombiano, me encanta mi país, su gente amable, su comida y su música, especialmente la salsa”.

En PyeongChang 2018 participará en Esquí Alpino.

Después de Poettoz, el turno le llegó a Pedro Causil, patinador de 26 años y nacido en la isla de San Andrés y quien se destacó por muchos años en el patinaje de carreras en línea, siendo múltiple campeón mundial, nueve veces en total. Su sueño durante muchos años fue participar en unos Juegos Olímpicos, pero al no ser su deporte parte del Ciclo Olímpico de Verano, tomó la difícil pero acertada decisión de cambiarse al patinaje sobre hielo. Pedro dejó todo en Colombia para perseguir su sueño, primero vivió en Holanda y luego en Estados Unidos. Su transición al hielo se dio hace un poco más de tres años, dedicándose a las pruebas de 500 y 1000 metros, pues para nadie es un secreto que la velocidad es lo suyo.

Después de varios años, de estar lejos de los suyos, de muchos entrenamientos, de concentraciones, de participaciones en Copas Mundo y de mucho, pero mucho valor, Pedro Causil hizo realidad su sueño, estar en unos Juegos Olímpicos. “Aquí está el fruto de tanto trabajo, gracias a mi familia y siento un gran alivio porque primero me cumplí a mí y después a todos los que me apoyaron”

En PyeongChang 2018 participará en Patinaje Short Track, 500 y 1000 metros

El tercer clasificado es Sebastián Uprimny un experimentado atleta de 42 años que nació en Francia, pero quien vive en Colombia desde el 1 año de edad. Sebastián ha tenido el deporte en su vida desde que era un estudiante universitario, pero el sueño olímpico le empezó a rondar la cabeza en 2002. Su preparación para PyeongChang 2018 comenzó hace más de dos años, en la que tuvo entrenamientos tantos en verano como en invierno. Durante el verano se dedicó al acondicionamiento físico mientras que en el invierno se dedicó a la técnica sobre el hielo en pistas de Estados Unidos, donde también participó en torneos locales. “Hay que ser realistas y saber que vamos a enfrentar a los mejores del mundo, es una competencia muy exigente y entregaré lo mejor de mí”, dijo el colombiano, publicó el Comité Olímpico Colombiano.

En PyeongChang 2018 participará en Esquí de Fondo, 15 kilómetros estilo libre.

Finalmente, Colombia contará con una mujer en la delegación, ella es Laura Gómez. La patinadora quien hace aproximadamente seis meses hizo el cambio del patinaje de ruedas al de hielo, logró la marca mínima tan solo cuatro meses después de haber iniciado en esta nueva modalidad, convirtiéndose en la primera mujer en la historia de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno, en clasificarse en tan corto tiempo. Laura estableció la marca mínima, pero estaba como segunda reserva, sin embargo, ante la no confirmación de algunas atletas, la colombiana recibió la confirmación de la Federación Internacional de Patinaje, de su clasificación a PyeongChang 2018.

La noticia es aún más especial para Laura, quien hizo parte de la Selección Colombia sobre ruedas entre 2014 y 2016, pero quien nunca consiguió un título mundial. Participó en el selectivo de 2017 y al no quedar en Equipo Nacional, tomó la decisión de incursionar en las pruebas de hielo.

CYNTHIA DENZLER, LA PRIMERA EN REPRESENTAR A COLOMBIA EN LOS JUEGOS OLÍMPICOS DE INVIERNO.

Cynthia Denzler, es una deportista colombo-estadounidense-suiza. Fue la primera atleta con nacionalidad colombiana en participar en unos Juegos de Invierno, en los realizados en Vancouver 2010 donde estuvo en las modalidades de slalom gigante y slalom. Nació en Estados Unidos, pero obtuvo la nacionalidad colombiana gracias a su padre, un suizo quien vivió muchos años en Colombia y decidió hacerla extensiva a su hija. Su deporte es el Squi Alpino, el cual practica desde los 4 años de edad. Su debut profesional fue en 1998 justamente el año en el que nació Michael Poettoz.

COLOMBIAWILL BE PRESENT IN PYEONGCHANG 2018

BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 1 February 2018.- Colombia is one of the countries in the world where winter, as such, with snow and dense layers of ice cannot be seen, the closest thing to the winter weather is the one in the high mountains, such as the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, the Nevado del Ruiz, the Sierra del Cocuy or the Nevado del Tolima, which are more than 5000 meters high, so they become places that are not very suitable for sports.

Despite of this, the Olympic Winter Games are no longer a surprise for Colombia, as more and more national athletes are practicing sports that are part of that cycle. Although, in the country they do not have how to prepare themselves, they do it abroad where they participate in tournaments, qualifiers and also they can train with the best in the world. This is how for this year, in the games that will be held in PyeongChang, Colombia will have the participation of four athletes, this being the second time that the coffee country takes part, taking into account that the first was in 2010 with the skier Cynthia Denzler.

Michael Poettoz, was the first Colombian to qualify for PyeongChang 2018. He was born in Cali on August 21, 1998, and it is not funny that he does not speak Spanish, because two years later he was given in adoption to Michael and Cécile Poettoz a French couple who soon took him to live in Europe.

Little Michael would start practicing skiing at the age of 3 years and guided by his father who also became his coach. At the age of 10, he began to take part in the national tournaments in Europe and only 5 years later he made his debut in international tournaments. He was the first Colombian athlete to carry the flag in a winter Olympics, at the Youth made in Lillehammer, Norway, 2016, so this becomes his second participation.

During his visit to Colombia, where he was accompanied by his father and a translator, Michael said that «it will always be a great pressure to represent Colombia in an Olympic Games. I have prepared myself conscientiously, I have dedicated many hours to my training, it is a great responsibility and I am going with a conscious preparation».  Well this may not be the first time he will wear the colors of the Colombian flag, but for the 19-year-old, it will never be easy, «nerves will be there, that is normal, but it will always be a great joy to represent Colombia, I can represent France, but I prefer to represent this country because I am also Colombian, I love my country, its friendly people, its food and its music, especially salsa «.

In PyeongChang 2018 he will participate in Alpine Skiing.

After Poettoz, the turn came to Pedro Causil, a 26-year-old skater born on the island of San Andrés and who stood out for many years in online speed skating, being a multiple World Champion, nine times in total. His dream for many years was to participate in an Olympic Games, but as his sport was not part of the Olympic Summer Cycle, he took the difficult but the successful decision to change to Ice Skating. Pedro left everything in Colombia to pursue his dream, first he lived in Holland and then in the United States. His transition to ice took place just a little more than three years ago, dedicating himself to the 500 and 1000 meter tests, because for nobody is a secret that speed is his strength.

After several years of being far from his owns, of many training sessions, of concentrations, of participation in World Cups and of a lot, but a lot of courage, Pedro Causil made his dream come true, being in an Olympic Games. «Here is the result of so much work, thanks to my family, and I feel a great relief because first I fulfilled myself and then all those who supported me».

In PyeongChang 2018 he will participate in Short Track Speed Skating, 500 and 1000 meters

The third athlete who qualified is Sebastian Uprimny, an experienced skier 42 years old, who was born in France, but who lives in Colombia since he was 1-year-old. In PyeongChang 2018 he will participate in Cross Country Skiing, 15 kilometers Freestyle.

Finally, Colombia will have a woman in the National Team, she is Laura Gómez. The skater who, about six months ago, made the change from roller skating to ice skating, achieved the minimum mark for the Winter Games qualification, just four months after starting in this new sport, becoming the first woman in the history of the Winter Olympics, in qualifying in such a short time. Laura established the minimum mark, but it was left as second withdraw option, however, as the non-confirmation of some athletes came, the Colombian received the confirmation of the International Skating Federation, of her classification to PyeongChang 2018.

The news is even more special for Laura, who was part of the Colombia Roller Skating team between 2014 and 2016, but who never got a world title. She took part for the 2017 National Team qualifiers, but she failed to make it, so that was one of the reasons why she decided to start her adventure into the ice tests.

CYNTHIA DENZLER, THE FIRST TO REPRESENT COLOMBIA IN THE WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES.

Cynthia Denzler, is a Colombian-American-Swiss athlete. She was the first one with Colombian nationality to participate in a Winter Games, the ones held in Vancouver 2010, where she was competing in Giant Slalom and Slalom. She was born in the United States, but obtained Colombian nationality thanks to her father, a Swiss who decided to make extending to her. Her sport is Alpine Squi, which she practices since she was 4 years old. Her professional debut was in 1998 precisely the year in which Michael Poettoz was born.
