TOKIO, Japón, 19 de julio de 2021.- Se animará a los atletas y funcionarios que participen en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 a mostrar su apoyo a la Tregua Olímpica firmando el Mural de la Tregua Olímpica en la Villa Olímpica.
El Mural fue inaugurado hoy en la Plaza de la Villa Olímpica por el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) y Tokio 2020, en presencia del Presidente del COI, Thomas Bach, junto con los Vicepresidentes del COI, los miembros salientes de la Comisión de Atletas del COI, el Alcalde de la Villa de Tokio 2020, KAWABUCHI Saburo, el Presidente de Tokio 2020, HASHIMOTO Seiko y la Gobernadora de Tokio, KOIKE Yuriko.
En su discurso, el Presidente del COI dijo: «Hoy inauguramos el Mural de la Tregua Olímpica aquí, en el corazón palpitante de los Juegos Olímpicos, la Villa Olímpica. Es aquí donde el espíritu olímpico cobra vida. Los atletas nos muestran que, a pesar de todas nuestras diferencias, es posible que la humanidad conviva en paz. Este es nuestro mensaje olímpico: sí, es posible competir entre nosotros, incluso por el premio mayor, pero al mismo tiempo convivir pacíficamente bajo un mismo techo en la Villa Olímpica».
Dirigiéndose a los atletas que van a competir en Tokio, el Presidente Bach dijo «Con este espíritu olímpico os invito a dejar vuestra firma en el Mural de la Tregua Olímpica, para mostrar vuestro compromiso de hacer un mundo mejor y más pacífico a través del deporte».
Durante la ceremonia de inauguración, el presidente de Tokio 2020, HASHIMOTO Seiko, destacó: «Con la llegada de representantes de todo el mundo a Tokio, creo que la época de oscuridad y división causada por la propagación del COVID-19 está llegando poco a poco a su fin, y que comienza una nueva era de paz y solidaridad. Aquí en Tokio, espero que los atletas añadan su firma en el mural, llamando como la voz de los Juegos Olímpicos a la paz en todo el mundo».
La inauguración del Mural de la Tregua Olímpica tuvo lugar tres días después de que entrara en vigor la Tregua Olímpica para los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de Tokio 2020.
Esta Tregua Olímpica se estableció en la resolución de la ONU titulada «Construir un mundo mejor y pacífico a través del deporte y el ideal olímpico», que fue aprobada por unanimidad en el 74º período de sesiones de la Asamblea General de la ONU en 2019 y fue copatrocinada por 186 de los 193 Estados miembros de la ONU, lo que demuestra el reconocimiento por parte de la comunidad internacional de la ONU del poder del deporte y la relevancia de los Juegos Olímpicos para unir al mundo en una competición pacífica, proporcionando esperanza para un futuro mejor. La resolución pide que se respete la tregua olímpica desde hoy hasta el 12 de septiembre de 2021 – siete días antes del inicio de los Juegos Olímpicos hasta siete días después de los Juegos Paralímpicos.
El Presidente de la Asamblea General de la ONU, Volkan Bozkir (Turquía), hizo a principios de julio un llamamiento solemne a los Estados miembros de la ONU para que se respete la tregua olímpica en los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de Tokio 2020. Su llamamiento fue reiterado por el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas (ONU), António Guterres, la semana pasada.
La tradición de la tregua olímpica, o «Ekecheiria», se remonta al siglo IX a.C. en la antigua Grecia como un periodo durante el cual cesaban las guerras y los conflictos para permitir un viaje seguro hacia y desde los antiguos Juegos Olímpicos. En la actualidad, la Tregua Olímpica representa el objetivo del COI de inspirar la paz a través del deporte, como reiteró el Presidente Bach durante su visita a Hiroshima a principios de esta semana.

Athletes invited to show commitment to building a peaceful world through sport at Tokyo 2020 by signing the Olympic Truce Mural

TOKYO, July 19, 2021.- Athletes and officials participating in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be encouraged to show their support for the Olympic Truce by signing the Olympic Truce Mural in the Olympic Village.
The Mural was inaugurated at the Olympic Village Plaza today by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020, in the presence of IOC President Thomas Bach, along with the IOC Vice-Presidents, the outgoing members of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, Tokyo 2020 Village Mayor KAWABUCHI Saburo, Tokyo 2020 President HASHIMOTO Seiko and the Governor of Tokyo, KOIKE Yuriko.
In his speech, the IOC President said: “Today we are inaugurating the Olympic Truce Mural here at the beating heart of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Village. It is here where the Olympic spirit comes to life. The athletes show us that, despite all our differences, it is possible for humankind to live together in peace. This is our Olympic message: yes, it is possible to compete with each other, even for the highest prize, but at the same time to live together peacefully under one roof in the Olympic Village”.
Addressing the athletes who are about to compete in Tokyo, President Bach said: “It is in this Olympic spirit that I invite you to leave your signature on the Olympic Truce Mural, to show your commitment to make a better and more peaceful world through sport”.
During the inauguration ceremony, Tokyo 2020 President HASHIMOTO Seiko stressed: “With the arrival of representatives from all over the world in Tokyo, I believe the time of darkness and division caused by the spread of COVID-19 is slowly coming to an end, and a new era of peace and solidarity is beginning. Here in Tokyo, I hope the athletes will add their signature on the mural, calling as the voice of the Olympic Games for peace all over the world”.
The inauguration of the Olympic Truce Mural took place three days after the Olympic Truce for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 came into effect.
This Olympic Truce was established in the UN resolution entitled “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic Ideal”, which was passed unanimously at the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly in 2019 and was co-sponsored by 186 out of 193 UN Member States, demonstrating the recognition by the UN’s international community of the power of sport and the relevance of the Olympic Games to bring the world together in peaceful competition, providing hope for a better future. The resolution calls for the Olympic Truce to be respected from today to 12 September 2021 – seven days before the start of the Olympic Games until seven days after the Paralympic Games.
A solemn appeal to the UN Member States for the observance of the Olympic Truce for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 was made by the President of the UN General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, earlier in July. His call was reiterated by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres last week.
The tradition of the Olympic Truce, or “Ekecheiria», dates back to the 9th century BC in Ancient Greece as a period during which war and conflict were ceased to allow for safe travel to and from the ancient Olympic Games. Today, the Olympic Truce represents the IOC’s aim to inspire peace through sport, as reiterated by President Bach during his visit to Hiroshima earlier in the week.
