Boxeador y doble campeón olímpico. Julio César la Cruz volvió a ser feliz tras nueve minutos de pelea sobre el ring y una medalla de oro en su cuello, cual regalo de cumpleaños adelantado por los 32 que cumplirá el próximo 11 de agosto.
Sus apodos más conocidos, La Sombra o El Doctor, quedaron hoy atrás. En la Arena Kokugikan todos coreaban su nombre. Y para este cronista la inteligencia con que manejó la pelea fue suficiente para llamarlo Emperador cubano del boxeo olímpico

Derrotó al campeón del mundo de esa división (91 kg), el ruso Muslim Gadzhimagomedov, quien venía precedido de más fama que los golpes que pudo conectar.
El camagüeyano no conoce lo que es divertirse, viajar a su casa o compartir entre amigos desde el 31 de agosto del 2020, fecha en que se concentró la selección nacional de boxeo para esta lid de los cinco aros, en las que han sacado ya tres dobles campeones olímpicos: Roniel Iglesias y Arlen López.
Pero volvamos al combate con Gadzhimagomedov. Vestido de azul, el antillano le dio la clásica receta del barrio: dar y que no te den, con un estilo que sigue teniendo detractores y defensores, pues si bien es cierto que no es de gran pegada, marca los puntos suficientes al rostro y pecho de sus rivales para salir siempre airoso.
Todavía encendido de alegría por el triunfo, Julio César se paró ante las cámaras y grabadoras. Había sido polémico días atrás por su frase de respuesta y convicción a un desafío que nunca debió existir entre cubanos.
Ahora sonreía y solo revelaba cuánto hay todavía de Emperador en él.
“Quiero dedicarle mi victoria al pueblo cubano. Todo el que conoce de deporte sabe que esto era un gran combate. Era amplio favorito el ruso porque había ganado durante todo el ciclo olímpico las competencias en esta división. Estaba invicto, No había perdido. Esta pelea traía bastante tensiones y expectativas.
“Mis entrenadores y toda la delegación cubana depositaron confianza en mí y no podía traicionarlos como tampoco al pueblo cubano. Me concentré en eso y salió la victoria. Quiero dedicarle este triunfo también a Alcides Sagarra, el padre de la escuela cubana de boxeo.
“Con el respeto de nuestro Mijaín López, sí el no asiste a los Juegos de París 2024 me gustaría ir y portar la bandera cubana. He ganado dos medallas de oro, pero estoy enfocado en eso. Triunfamos aquí y vamos ahora a disfrutar con la familia. Luego iniciaremos la preparación para Paris 2024”.
Y Julio César, Emperador del boxeo olímpico, se retiró a festejar. La batalla había sido fielmente ganada.
