Stuttgart (dpa) – Second seed Angelique Kerber clinched back-to-back titles at the Porsche Grand Prix as she denied the fairytale run of fellow-German qualifier Laura Siegemund a happy end on Sunday.
Kerber prevailed 6-4, 6-0 on her first match point in 1 hour 21 minutes against a tiring opponent for her second title of the year, following the Australian Open crown from January, and ninth overall.
The 28-year-old Kerber received 129,551 dollars and a shiny orange sports car from the title sponsor.
The Stuttgart native Siegemund took home 69,182 dollars from her best career tournament. She beat top 10 players Agnieszka Radwanska, Roberta Vinci and Simona Halep, and didn’t drop a set en route to her first career final.
Siegemund will rise from 71 to 42 in the next world rankings Monday, in which Kerber remains third behind Serena Williams and Radwanska.
