TOKIO, Japón, 1 de agosto de 2021.- El rugby se ha convertido en uno de los deportes más populares de Argentina, y eso quedó demostrado con el tercer lugar del equipo masculino en la modalidad sevens de los Juegos Olímpicos Tokio 2020, un bronce que para los albicelestes se siente como un oro. Argentina fue el único equipo masculino de Suramérica presente en el rugby olímpico.

En Rio 2016, los británicos eliminaron a los suramericanos 5:0 y en extra tiempo, por lo que una victoria era una asignatura pendiente que no querían dejar posponer más, razón por la cual el control de pelota, la presión y el ataque vertical salieron a flote; al final el triunfo 17-12 sobre Gran Bretaña, -medallistas de plata en Rio 2016- gracias a las anotaciones de Lautaro Bazán, Marcos Moneta e Ignacio Mendy, se convirtió en la primera medalla lograda por Argentina en su segunda participación en los Juegos Olímpicos en este deporte y en la primera de Tokio 2020. Los ‘Pumas’ que estuvieron dirigidos por Santiago Gómez Cora, llegaron a la instancia de la disputa por el tercer puesto, luego de vencer a Sudáfrica en un épico partido en el que tuvieron un jugador menos, y de perder con Fiji, que al final logró la medalla de oro.

«Conseguir la primera medalla para el país es un orgullo. Antes del partido nos dijimos que íbamos a jugar por algo más grande. Jugamos por nosotros, por nuestras familias, por nuestros amigos, por un país gigante. Se sintió el apoyo», dijo Rodrigo Etchart, uno de los integrantes del equipo.

Argentina pionero del rugby en Suramérica

El rugby que nació en Escocia en 1883, llegó al continente americano gracias a Argentina, cumpliéndose el pasado 9 de julio, 100 años de existencia en este país suramericano. El rugby se instaló en el Buenos Aires Football Club y el Buenos Aires Cricket Club hoy día el Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club. Varios socios que asistían allí fueron soldados en la Primera Guerra Mundial por lo que la práctica de este deporte de detuvo por un par de años. Luego de la guerra, se decidió organizar el primer torneo seven, con la intención de afianzar el deporte, gracias a los conocimientos de varios socios que habían estudiado en Escocia e Inglaterra; el torneo se realizó por 16 años continuos, pero con la particularidad que no hubo campeón, se dice qué, “al momento de disputarse la final, sonaba una campana que avisaba que el asado estaba listo y el público invadía el terreno de juego, así se lee en la página de Sudamérica rugby.

Marcos Moneta se convirtió en el tryman del torneo, tras notar seis; contra Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Fiji y Gran Bretaña convirtió 1, y dos contras Nueva Zelanda.

Esta es la primera medalla olímpica de Argentina en Tokio y la primera en toda su historia de este deporte.

Argentina jugó el último partido sin su capitán Gastón Revol, expulsado por un tackle alto en los cuartos de final contra Sudáfrica (4 fechas de suspensión), ni Matías Osadczuk (lesionado).

TOKYO, Japan, August 1, 2021.-Rugby has become one of the most popular sports in Argentina, and this was demonstrated with the Men’s team third place in the sevens modality of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, a bronze that for the ‘albicelestes’ feels like gold. Argentina was the only South American men’s team present in Olympic rugby.

In Rio 2016, the British eliminated the South Americans 5:0 and in overtime, so a victory was a pending issue that they did not want to wait for any longer, for this reason, the ball control, pressure and vertical attack came to the field, and at the end, the 17-12 triumph over Great Britain, -silver medalists in Rio 2016- thanks to the annotations of Lautaro Bazán, Marcos Moneta and Ignacio Mendy, became the first medal achieved by Argentina in its second participation in the Olympic Games in this sport and the first one in Tokio 2020. The ‘Pumas’ coached by Santiago Gómez Cora, reached the stage to dispute the third place, after beating South Africa in an epic match in which they had one less player; and losing to Fiji, which in the end won the gold medal.

«Getting the first medal for the country is a pride. Before the game we told ourselves that we were going to play for something bigger. We played for ourselves, for our families, for our friends, for our giant country. We felt the support», said Rodrigo Etchart, one of the team members.

Argentina pioneer of rugby in South America

Rugby, which was born in Scotland in 1883, arrived on the American continent thanks to Argentina, actually celebrating last July 9, 100 years of existence in this South American country. Rugby settled in the Buenos Aires Football Club and the Buenos Aires Cricket Club today known as the Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club. Some members who attended there were soldiers in the First World War, so the practice of this sport stopped for a couple of years. After the war, it was decided to organize the first seven tournament, with the intention of strengthening the sport, thanks to the knowledge of several members who had studied in Scotland and England; the tournament was held for 16 continuous years, but with the particularity that there was no champion, it is said that, “when the final was about to be played, a bell rang to warn that the barbecue was ready so the public used to invaded the field of play”, it reads on the Sudamerica Rugby website.

Facts

Marcos Moneta became the try-man of the tournament, after scoring six; against Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Great Britain they did 1, and two against New Zealand.

This is Argentina’s first Olympic medal in Tokyo and the first in its history in this sport.

Argentina played the last game without their captain Gastón Revol, sent off for a high tackle in the quarterfinals against South Africa (4 games of suspension), nor Matías Osadczuk (injured).
