BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 5 de febrero de 2018.- La isla del encanto volverá luego de 16 años a los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno, después de estar presente por última vez en Salt Lake, Utah en 2002. En esta oportunidad en PyeongChang 2018, el país caribeño contará con la participación del esquiador Charles Arthur Hammond Flaherty, quien espera llegar a Corea de Sur el jueves junto a su entrenadora Sara Radamus, teniendo en cuenta que su participación pasó por varios meses de incertidumbre.

Charles Arthur estará participando en Esquí Alpino, debutando el sábado 18 de febrero en la modalidad de Giants Slalom, y cuatro días después, el 22 de febrero competirá en Slalom, eventos que se realizarán en el Youngpyong Alpine Centre.

EL AVAL

Charles Flaherty competirá por Puerto Rico en Pyeongchang

El aval para poder estar en el listado de participantes llevó más de 3 meses, pues Charles Arthur no es puertorriqueño de nacimiento ni tiene sangre boricua. Sin embargo, el atleta de 17 años, ya lleva 8 viviendo en la isla y cuenta con pasaporte de ese país, pero no pertenecía a una Federación afiliada al Comité Olímpico de Puerto Rico, al final, los documentos estuvieron en regla y luego de varias reuniones, la presidenta del COPUR, Sara Rosario, anunció que Charles estará en PyeongChang llevando el uniforme de Puerto Rico.

Según la publicación online www.elnuevodia.com el asesor legal del COPUR, Licenciado Fernando Olivero expresó: “Primero se negó porque la federación no estaba afiliada. Pero ahora se determinó darle una afiliación condicionada debido a que no es un deporte de reconocimiento amplio en la Isla. Esa afiliación condicionada es por seis meses y no tienen ni voto ni fondos asignados. Y en seis meses tienen que regresar a demostrar que tienen un programa efectivo, de propósitos sólidos, que corre de una manera regular y que tiene atletas que forman parte de ese programa. El número no es importante. Varía de federación en federación. Pero tienen que demostrar una consistencia en el trabajo y efectividad de manera continua. Si eso no sucede, caduca la afiliación”, dijo Olivero.

DELEGACIÓN

Dentro de la delegación también estará presente el Presidente de la Federación Puertorriqueña de Atletas Invernarles (FPAI), el señor Antonio Colón, quien manifestó que “estamos súper emocionados. Emocionados porque hay una coyuntura bien grande en estos juegos.  Hace 16 años que no vamos. Segundo, está la situación del equipo de Nigeria que hace pensar lo mismo que Puerto Rico, practican el deporte de invierno cuando no tienen invierno per sé, el equipo de Rusia con el problema de dopaje y ahora esos atletas van a ir a competir bajo la bandera del Comité Olímpico Internacional, y por ultimo las Coreas (Norte y Sur) desfilarán juntas en la ceremonia de inauguración”.

Como Jefe de Misión estará Betsmara Cruz, quien manifestó a través de la Oficina de Prensa del Comité Olímpico de Puerto Rico que “Salimos el lunes (5 de febrero) con destino PyeongChang, llegando el martes 6:45 a.m. a Seúl. La diferencia de hora será de 12 entre ambos países. La agenda de trabajo incluye el registro de la delegación para el miércoles en Seúl donde estaremos revisando todos los detalles de transportación y hospedaje. De ahí nos estarán transportando a la ciudad de los Juegos”

Además de Puerto Rico el continente americano tendrá la participación de Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, México, Bermuda, Canadá, Ecuador, Chile, Jamaica y Estados Unidos.

Puerto Rico ready for PyeongChang

BOGOTÁ, Colombia, February 5, 2018.- The Charm Island will return after 16 years to the Olympic Winter Games, after being present for the last time in Salt Lake, Utah in 2002. This time in PyeongChang 2018, the Caribbean country will participate with the skier Charles Arthur Hammond Flaherty, who hopes to arrive in South Korea on Thursday with his trainer Sara Radamus, considering that his participation went through several months of uncertainty.

Charles Arthur will be participating in Alpine Skiing, his debut will be on Saturday, February 18, in the Giants Slalom event, and four days later, on February 22 he will compete in Slalom, events that will take place in the Youngpyong Alpine Center.

THE CONFIRMATION

The conformation to be on the list of participants took more than 3 months, since Charles Arthur is not Puerto Rican by birth nor has Boricua blood. However, the 17-year-old athlete has already lived for 5 years in the island and has a passport from that country, but he did not belong to a Federation affiliated to the Olympic Committee of Puerto Rico. At the end, the documents were in order and after several meetings, the president of COPUR, Sara Rosario, announced that Charles will be in PyeongChang wearing the Puerto Rican uniform.

According to the online publication www.elnuevodia.com the COPUR legal advisor, Mr. Fernando Olivero said: «First he refused because the Federation was not affiliated. But now it was determined to give it a conditional membership because it is not a widely recognized sport on the island. That conditional membership is for six months; they do not have a vote or funds allocated. And in six months they have to return to show that they have an effective, solid-purpose program that runs on a regular basis and that has athletes who are part of that program. The number is not important. Varies from Federation to Federation. But they have to demonstrate consistency in work and effectiveness on an ongoing basis. If that does not happen, the affiliation expires, «said Olivero.

NATIONAL TEAM

The president of the Puerto Rican Federation of Winter Athletes (FPAI), Mr. Antonio Colón, will also be present with the National Team, and he also said that «we are super excited. Excited because there are several situations in these games. We have not been going for 16 years. Second, there is the situation of the Nigerian team that makes us think the same as Puerto Rico, they practice the winter sport when they do not have winter per se, the Russian team with the problem of doping and now those athletes are going to compete under the flag of the International Olympic Committee, and finally the Koreas (North and South) will parade together at the opening ceremony. »

As Head of Mission will be Betsmara Cruz, who stated through the Press Office of the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee that «We left on Monday (February 5) with destination PyeongChang, arriving on Tuesday 6:45 a.m. to Seoul. The time difference will be 12 hours between both countries. The work agenda includes the registration of the delegation for Wednesday in Seoul where we will be reviewing all the details of transportation and lodging. From there they will be transporting us to the city of the Games»

In addition to Puerto Rico, the American continent will have the participation of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Bermuda, Canada, Ecuador, Chile, Jamaica and the United States.
