Frankfurt (dpa) – Reinhard Grindel was Friday elected president of the German Football Association (DFB) at an extraordinary congress in Frankfurt.
Grindel, previously DFB treasurer, was the only candidate standing and was approved by 250 votes to four.
The 54-year-old Grindel must have his presidency confirmed at a regular congress in early November which will signal the start of his three-year term.
Previous president Wolfgang Niersbach resigned in November over the over a payment made by Germany’s 2006 World Cup organizing committee to football world governing body FIFA.
The DFB had been led by interim presidents Rainer Koch and Reinhard Rauball following Niersbach’s resignation.
Grindel is a former journalist and a member of parliament for the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) but will give up this position to take over at the DFB.
