LAUSANA, Suiza 12 de junio de 2021.- Tras algo más de un mes y un total de 30 intensos y reveladores encuentros de Zoom repartidos en tres días a la semana, la segunda edición del e-College de la AIPS llegó a su fin el 11 de junio, dejando huellas imborrables en las mentes periodísticas de los participantes.
El tema del e-College 2021 fue «La hora de reconstruir el periodismo deportivo», que introdujo un concepto único de puerta a puerta que hizo posible que los asistentes absorbieran lecciones y debates exhaustivos en su idioma oficial, mientras estaban en la comodidad de su zona horaria, de forma gratuita. Todas las sesiones se llevaron a cabo a través de Zoom.

ORGULLO. «Estoy muy orgulloso de lo que hemos construido juntos», dijo el presidente de la AIPS, Gianni Merlo, durante la última semana. «Hemos emprendido una especie de globalización, porque ahora ustedes tienen amigos en todo el mundo y pueden contactar con ellos para obtener la información adecuada de sus países».
«Nuestra asociación ha creado este curso para demostrar que respetamos a todo el mundo. Es nuestro deber encontrar un equilibrio. No queríamos que ninguna parte del mundo se sintiera apartada de los debates, por eso lo organizamos en diferentes idiomas», añadió.
Unos 70 países estuvieron representados en el proyecto de aprendizaje a distancia, que ha permitido a los estudiantes estar al día de las últimas tendencias y también ver el panorama general: la reinvención del periodismo no puede posponerse más y las noticias falsas son sólo la punta del iceberg. Incluso en tiempos difíciles y desafiantes, el buen periodismo nunca se detiene. Y este es un mensaje que el e-College ha mantenido desde su creación en abril de 2020.
SESIONES GLOBALES. Cada una de las seis semanas del e-College 2021 se centró en diferentes temas cruciales y se abrió con una sesión global, celebrada con traducción simultánea en árabe, inglés, francés y español los martes. Sólo la penúltima sesión tuvo que trasladarse al jueves (3 de junio), con motivo de los 50 días que faltaban entonces para Tokio 2020, desde el Museo Olímpico de Lausana, con la aparición del presidente del Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI), Thomas Bach, en un acto especial que coincidió con el lanzamiento del libro ¡Toon In! de Michael Payne.
TEMAS. Otros temas fueron la fotografía, la radiodifusión, la redacción, el periodismo de investigación, el periodismo robótico, las noticias falsas y la política transgénero: Ciencia frente a ideología. Cada sesión contó con la presencia de los ganadores de los premios AIPS Sport Media Awards, invitados internacionales de primera fila y compañeros de profesión de los medios de comunicación, que compartieron valiosas ideas y respondieron a las preguntas de los participantes. Las sesiones globales estuvieron abiertas a todos los periodistas. La política transgénero: Ciencia vs. Ideología fue el tema más delicado que se debatió en el e-College, con las renombradas defensoras del deporte femenino Donna de Varona y Martina Navratilova como ponentes en la sesión global, junto con expertos legales y médicos. Posteriormente, las sesiones continentales contaron con un total de cinco ex y actuales atletas transgénero que compartieron sus experiencias personales.
TUTORÍAS CONTINENTALES. Las tutorías continentales, que se dividieron en cuatro idiomas y zonas horarias, profundizaron en los puntos planteados en las sesiones globales y proporcionaron una plataforma más íntima para que los estudiantes menores de 30 años interactuaran con sus experimentados mentores, que a veces estaban acompañados por invitados. También se animó a los jóvenes reporteros a trabajar en diferentes tareas antes o después de las sesiones y se les proporcionaron comentarios personalizados. Dirigidos por el presidente de la AIPS, Gianni Merlo, los mentores de esta edición fueron Martín Mazur (Argentina), Keir Radnedge (Reino Unido), Riccardo Romani (Italia) y Jean Paul Savart (Francia). Participaron en las sesiones globales, cada martes, antes de dirigir sus propias tutorías continentales en la segunda sesión de la semana.
CERTIFICADOS. Los participantes que hayan asistido al menos a nueve de las doce lecciones y hayan participado en las tareas recibirán certificados de la AIPS.

LO QUE DIJERON
«Lo que más he aprendido del e-College de la AIPS es el hecho de que los retos a los que me enfrento como joven reportero, que creía muy personales, son en realidad los retos de muchos otros en todo el mundo», dijo Wojciech Nowakowski, de Polonia, y añadió que el e-College también proporcionó una «gran oportunidad» para establecer muchos contactos internacionales. «Estoy muy contento de haber podido participar en un proyecto así y ahora, al escribir estas palabras apenas unos minutos después de que concluyera la última sesión, ya lo estoy echando de menos», concluyó.
Tener esa oportunidad de conectar con personas de todo el mundo «es la mejor experiencia que cualquier periodista puede pedir», dijo Abir Rharib, de Marruecos, al reflexionar sobre una experiencia que le pareció «muy enriquecedora» y de la que ha «aprendido tantas habilidades y estrategias» -como contar historias, crear una red de fuentes y utilizar las palabras adecuadas- que le ayudarán a crear contenidos periodísticos impactantes en diversas plataformas de medios de comunicación . Como periodistas podemos acercar a las personas y las culturas». El Sr. Radnedge dijo en la última clase que «un verdadero periodista se centra en transmitir conocimientos y educación a los lectores, espectadores y oyentes, y siempre va a ser valioso en el futuro».
Azra Isic, de España, dijo: «Ser alumna del AIPS e-College este año me ha ayudado a crecer como profesional. Tanto en las sesiones globales como en las continentales, he tenido la oportunidad de conocer a muchos periodistas deportivos, profesionales de gran experiencia y deportistas de élite que, a través de su experiencia y sus consejos, me han enseñado mucho y me han ayudado a abrir los ojos, a ser más objetiva, a tener más confianza y a ser mejor periodista». En particular, Isic, que tiene raíces bosnias, dijo que era un honor haber podido aprender de Hassen Guedioura, ganador de los AIPS Sport Media Awards 2020 en la categoría de vídeo corto, después de que su vídeo premiado Ines Ibbou le causara una gran impresión. Además, escuchar a Mara Gómez y Lorena Berluda en la sesión sobre política transgénero «me hizo ponerme en su piel para entender por lo que están pasando».
Erenayo Dorcas Koki, de Nigeria, describió el curso como «esclarecedor, educativo e informativo». Dijo: «Seis magníficas semanas en las que hemos aprendido sobre periodismo de investigación, a revelar la suciedad que la gente quiere mantener oculta, a fotografiar imágenes de calidad y a filmar documentales con el corazón o el ángulo humano. Entender la «inclusión» de los atletas «transgénero» en el deporte, y lo importante que es informar de este tipo de historias desde una posición imparcial, y por supuesto, tener que hablar de los «Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio» valió la pena».
«Esta oportunidad me abrió muchas puertas», reveló Abrar Fuhaid, de Yemen. «A través de ella pude encontrar las mejores respuestas a todas mis preguntas; mi comprensión y visión de las cosas se ampliaron de una manera sin precedentes». Fuhaid añadió: «Después de cada conferencia busco el vocabulario mencionado durante la sesión y lo consulto exhaustivamente. Lo que distingue a este curso es que pudimos contactar e interactuar con profesionales de los medios de comunicación de alto nivel de todo el mundo en múltiples campos y pudimos hacer todas nuestras preguntas sin ninguna restricción. Compartimos opiniones con cariño, sin ningún tipo de prejuicio y, a pesar de nuestras diferentes etnias, religiones y dialectos, nos sentimos realmente cercanos como si estuviéramos allí en la realidad».
Miguel Paulo, de Uruguay, dijo que el e-College fue «una experiencia extremadamente beneficiosa». Añadió: «Nos dio la oportunidad de compartir ideas, conocer otros escenarios y discutir temas de actualidad. Se pusieron sobre la mesa temas que son fundamentalmente necesarios para el desarrollo de nuestro trabajo hoy en día, y eso se agradece».
Según Djelika Guindo, de Malí, el curso ha desenterrado un «potencial oculto en mí». «Aunque mi especialidad sea presentar programas deportivos y comentar partidos, también me gusta hacer reportajes, fotos y vídeos, y este programa me ha enseñado cómo, cuándo y dónde hacerlo y a tener confianza en mí misma».
Madiagne Niang, de Senegal, añadió: «La formación me permitió profundizar mis conocimientos en el campo del periodismo, desde la recopilación hasta el tratamiento. Me dio las claves adecuadas para ser rápidamente operativa y estar preparada para las dificultades del trabajo. Por ejemplo, aprendí a perfeccionar mi forma de entrevistar a las personas. El programa me ha dado una idea muy clara sobre la cuestión de la transexualidad, y la forma de hablar de este delicado tema en nuestros medios de comunicación, aunque no siempre sea evidente, especialmente en un país conservador como el mío. A través de este programa, conseguí «desenterrar» algunos trucos para hacer una muy buena investigación periodística. Estas son las sesiones que más me han gustado porque me encanta investigar».
GRATITUD. Desde las clases hasta las redes sociales, los estudiantes han seguido expresando su gratitud a los mentores, a los invitados e incluso a sus compañeros por el éxito del e-College AIPS 2021. Agradecen especialmente la oportunidad de haber podido aprender e interactuar en su propio idioma. «Pudimos aprender y debatir temas en profundidad y de una forma muy interesante y que llamó la atención», observó Fuhaid.
«La traducción fue perfecta en las sesiones globales y me permitió estar al mismo nivel de comprensión que los demás», dijo Niang.
Para Guindo, el servicio de traducción de la sesión global fue «a veces complicado para captar todos los puntos», pero las sesiones en francés continental «me permitieron entender mejor las presentaciones, compartir mis ideas y hacer preguntas sin ningún problema». Y añadió: «Lo más importante para mí es que he podido conocer a gente nueva que habla mi mismo idioma, lo que enriquecerá mi lista de contactos».
Paulo dijo: «El hecho de que nos haya dado la oportunidad de tener sesiones en nuestro idioma también enriquece la experiencia, porque más allá del idioma, compartimos experiencias más cercanas que nos permitieron desarrollar las ideas con claridad». Este e-College enseñó, inspiró y nos dio fuerzas para seguir adelante».

Of life, career and unity in diversity: Young reporters share lessons learnt as curtain falls on 2021 AIPS e-College

LAUSANNE, June 12, 2021.– After just over a month packed with a total of 30 intensive, eye-opening Zoom meetings spread across three days a week, the second edition of the AIPS e-College came to an end on June 11, leaving indelible footprints in the journalistic minds of participants.

“Time to Rebuild Sport Journalism” was the theme of the 2021 e-College, which introduced a unique door-to-door concept that made it possible for the attendees to absorb comprehensive lessons and discussions in their official language, while in the comfort of their time zone, for free. All sessions were conducted on Zoom.

PROUD. “I’m very proud of what we have built together,” AIPS President Gianni Merlo said during the final week. “We have engaged in a kind of globalisation because now you have friends around the world and you can contact them to get the right information from their countries.

“Our association has created this course to show that we respect everybody. It is our duty to find a balance. We did not want any part of the world to feel cut off from the discussions, that’s why we organized it in different languages,” he added.

About 70 countries were represented in the distance-learning project, which has enabled students to be up-to-date with the latest trends and also see the bigger picture: reinventing journalism cannot be postponed any longer and fake news are just the tip of the iceberg. Even in difficult and challenging times, good journalism never stops. And this is one message the e-College has upheld since it was created in April 2020.

GLOBAL SESSIONS. Each of the six weeks in the 2021 e-College focused on different crucial topics and opened with a global session, held with simultaneous translations in Arabic, English, French and Spanish on Tuesdays. It was only the penultimate session that had to be moved to Thursday (June 3), so as to mark 50 days to Tokyo 2020 from the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, with the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach making an appearance in a special event that coincided with the launch of Michael Payne’s Toon In!

TOPICS. Other topics were Photography, Broadcasting, Writing, Investigative Reporting, Robot Reporting, Fake News and Transgender Politics: Science vs Ideology, with each session featuring AIPS Sport Media Awards winners, top international guests and fellow media professionals, who shared invaluable insights and fielded questions from participants. The global sessions were open to all journalists. Transgender Politics: Science vs Ideology was the most sensitive topic discussed in the e-College with renowned women’s sports advocates Donna de Varona and Martina Navratilova as speakers in the global session alongside legal and medical experts. The continental sessions subsequently featured a total of five former and current transgender athletes who shared their personal experiences.

CONTINENTAL TUTORIALS. The continental tutorials, which were split into four languages and time zones delved deeper into the points raised from the global sessions and provided a more intimate platform for the students under 30 to interact with their experienced mentors, who were sometimes accompanied by guests. The young reporters were also encouraged to work on different assignments before or after the sessions and are given personalised feedbacks. Led by AIPS president Gianni Merlo, mentors for this edition were Martin Mazur (Argentina), Keir Radnedge (UK), Riccardo Romani (Italy) and Jean Paul Savart (France). They participated in the global sessions, each Tuesday, before conducting their own continental tutorials in the second session of the week.

CERTIFICATES. Participants who attended at least nine out of 12 lessons and also took part in assignments will receive certificates from AIPS.

WHAT THEY SAID

“What I’ve mostly learned from the AIPS eCollege is the fact, that the challenges I am facing as a young reporter, which I thought are very personal, are in fact the challenges to many others all around the world,” Wojciech Nowakowski from Poland said, adding that the e-College also provided a “great opportunity” to establish many international contacts. “I am very happy that I could have taken part in such a project and now, writing the words just a few minutes after the final session concluded, I am already missing it,” he concluded.

Having that chance to connect with people from all over the world “is the best experience any journalist can ask for”, said Abir Rharib from Morocco, as she reflected on an experience that she found “very enriching” and from which she has “learned so many skills and strategies” – like storytelling, building a network of sources and using the right words – that will help her create impactful journalistic content across various media platforms . “As journalists we can bring people and cultures together. Mr. Radnedge said in last class that ‘a real journalist focuses on transmitting knowledge and education to readers, viewers, and listeners, and is going to always be valuable in the future’.”

Azra Isic from Spain said: “Being an AIPS e-College student this year has helped me to grow as a professional. In both global and continental sessions, I have had the opportunity to meet many sports journalists, highly experienced professionals and elite athletes, who, through their experience and advice, have taught me a lot and have helped me open my eyes, be more objective, confident and a better journalist.” Particularly, Isic, who has Bosnian roots, said it was an honour to have been able to learn from Hassen Guedioura winner of the AIPS Sport Media Awards 2020 in Short Video category, after his award-winning video Ines Ibbou made a huge impression on her. Also, listening to Mara Gomez and Lorena Berluda in the session about transgender politics “made me put myself in their shoes to understand what they are going through”.

Erenayo Dorcas Koki from Nigeria described the course as “enlightening, educative and informative”. She said: “Six great weeks of being taught about investigative journalism, revealing the dirt people want to keep hidden, how to photograph quality pictures and filming heart felt or human angle documentaries. Understanding ‘inclusion’ of ‘Transgender’ Athletes in sports, and how important it is to report these kinds of stories from an unbiased position, and of course, having to discuss the ‘Tokyo Olympics’ was all worth my time.”

“This opportunity opened many doors for me,” Abrar Fuhaid from Yemen revealed. “Through it I was able to find the best answers to all my questions; my understanding and vision of things expanded in an unprecedented way.”

Fuhaid added: “After each lecture I search for the vocabulary mentioned during the session and look extensively. What distinguishes this course is that we were able to reach and interact with high profile media professionals from all around the world in multiple fields and we were able to ask all our questions without any restrictions. We shared opinions with love, without any prejudice and despite our different ethnicity, religions and dialects, we really felt close as if we were there in reality.”

Miguel Paulo from Uruguay said the e-College was “an extremely beneficial experience”. He added: “It gave us the opportunity to share ideas, learn about other scenarios and discuss current issues. Topics that are fundamentally necessary for the development of our work nowadays were put on the table, and that is appreciated.”

According to Djelika Guindo from Mali the course has unearthed a “hidden potential in me”. “Even if my speciality is hosting sports shows and commentating matches, I also like reporting, taking photos, making videos, and this programme has showed me how, when and where to do it and to have self-confidence.”

Madiagne Niang from Senegal added: “The training allowed me to deepen my knowledge in the field of journalism, from collection to processing. It gave me the right keys to be quickly operational and prepared for the difficulties of the job. For example, I learned to perfect my approach to interviewing people. The programme has given me a very clear idea about the transgender issue, and the way to talk about this sensitive topic in our media, even if it is not always obvious, especially in a conservative country as mine. Through this programme, I managed to «unearth» some tricks to make a very good journalistic investigation. This is the sessions that I liked the most because I love investigating.”

GRATITUDE. From class to social media, the students have continued to express gratitude to the mentors, guests and even their colleagues for a successful 2021 AIPS e-College. They are especially appreciative of the opportunity to have been able to learn and interact in their own language. “We were able to learn and discuss topics in depth and in a very interesting and attention catching way,” Fuhaid observed.

“The translation was perfect at the global sessions and it allowed me to be at the same level of understanding as the others,” said Niang.

For Guindo, the translation service for the global session was “sometimes complicated to get all the points” but the continental French sessions “allowed me a better understanding of presentations, sharing my thoughts and asking question without any problem”. He added: “The most important for me is that I was able to meet new people who speak the same language as me, and this will enrich my contacts list.”

Paulo said: “The fact that it has given us the opportunity to have sessions in our language also enriches the experience, because beyond language, we share closer experiences that allowed us to develop the ideas clearly. This e-College taught, inspired and gave us strength to keep going”.
