TOKIO, Japón, 30 de julio de 2021- El ‘Golden Slam’ estaba tan cerca, pero tan lejos para Novak Djokovic. El primer cabeza de serie serbio sólo puede luchar ahora por una medalla de bronce en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 después de que fuera derrotado en tres sets por 1-6, 6-3 y 6-1 por el cuarto cabeza de serie, el alemán Alexander Zverev, en la semifinal del individual masculino.
Djokovic también sufrió una derrota en la semifinal de los dobles mixtos de los Juegos.
Después de haber ganado tres Grand Slams en lo que va de año, el número 1 del mundo sólo necesitaba la medalla de oro en Tokio y el título del US Open en Nueva York para completar una hazaña histórica. Sin embargo, ahora se enfrentará a Pablo Carreño Busta en el partido por la medalla de bronce el domingo, mientras que Zverev se enfrentará a Karen Khachanov, del Comité Olímpico Ruso, en el partido por la medalla de oro.
Zverev es el primer alemán que llega a una final olímpica de tenis desde que Tommy Haas ganó la plata en los Juegos de Sydney en 2000.

«Es increíble ganar al mejor jugador del mundo, sin duda, ahora mismo y en esta temporada. Parecía imposible ganarle en este evento, así que estoy muy feliz ahora mismo. Pero aún queda un partido por delante».
Poco después de la decepción en los individuales, Djokovic regresó para el dobles mixto con Nina Stojanovic, pero no pudo encontrar ningún consuelo ya que perdieron 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 ante la pareja de la ROC Elena Vesnina y Aslan Karatsev.
«Me siento muy mal ahora mismo», dijo Djokovic tras la conclusión de su partido de dobles.
Reflexionando sobre su anterior derrota ante Zverev, dijo: «Iba ganando un set y luego un break y él consiguió darle la vuelta al partido. Sirvió mucho, atacó y yo no conseguí puntos con mis primeros saques. Y yo fallé muchos primeros saques desde el 3-2 en el segundo. Jugar contra alguien de su calidad, de su nivel, es demasiado duro para ganar un partido».

“I feel terrible right now”: ‘Golden Slam’ hopes end for Novak Djokovic as Zverev reaches Tokyo 2020 final

TOKYO, July 30, 2021.- The ‘Golden Slam’ was so near, yet so far for Novak Djokovic. The Serbian top seed can only now fight for a bronze medal at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after he was beaten in three sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 by fourth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany in the semifinal of the men’s singles.
Djokovic also suffered defeat in the semifinal of the mixed doubles at the Games.
Having won three Grand Slams so far this year, the world No.1 only needed the gold medal in Tokyo and the US Open title in New York to complete a historic feat. He will however now face Pablo Carreno Busta in the bronze-medal match on Sunday, while Zverev take on Russian Olympic Committee’s Karen Khachanov in the gold-medal match.
Zverev is the first German man to make an Olympic tennis final since Tommy Haas won silver at the Sydney Games in 2000.
The ‘Golden Slam’ entails winning all four tennis grand slams and an Olympic gold medal in the same year. Steffi Graf remains the only tennis player to have achieved the Golden Slam. She did so in 1988.
“I feel sorry for Novak, but he’s won 20 grand slams, 550 masters or whatever,” Zverev said. “You can’t have everything. He’s the greatest player of all time, he will win the most grand slams out of anybody on tour, but I’m also happy that I’m in the final.
“It’s incredible beating the best player in the world undoubtedly right now and in this season. It seemed it was impossible to beat him at this event, so I’m very happy right now. But yet there’s still one match to go.”
Shortly after the disappointment in the singles, Djokovic returned for the mixed doubles with Nina Stojanovic, but he could not find any consolation as they lost 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 to ROC pair Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev.
“I feel so terrible right now,” Djokovic said after the conclusion of his doubles match.
Reflecting on his earlier defeat by Zverev, he said: “I was leading a set then a break and he managed to turn the match around. He served huge, was attacking, and I was not getting any free points on my first serves. And I missed a lot of first serves from 3-2 in the second. To play someone of his quality, of his level, it’s just too tough to win a match.”
